Herbs, annual, 15-100 cm tall. Stem branched, erect, decumbent or climbing, angular, hollow, puberulent or pubescent. Leaves paripinnate, 3-7(-10) cm; petioles less than 1 cm long; stipules hastate, semi-sagittate or lanceolate, ca. 3-5.5 mm long, 2-5 toothed, puberulent, red spot near point of attachment; leaflets 3-6(-9) pairs, alternate, opposite or subopposite, linear to oblong-cuneate to obcordate, 9-20 mm x 2-4 mm, hairy, apex obtuse, truncate or emarginate, mucronate; rachis ending into 2-3 branched tendril, dorsal canal on petiole and rachis, petiole and rachis hairy. Flowers 1 or 2, axillary, bisexual, zygomorphic, 5-merous, perigynous; pedicel very short, 1 cm long. Sepals 5, fused; calyx tubular-campanulate or tubular, 7-9 mm long, hairy, teeth shorter or longer (3-11 mm long) than tube, subequal. Corolla papilionaceous, blue-purple or purple to red; vexillum long, obovate, 15 mm x 7mm, base narrow, apex emarginate, mucronate; wings 12.5-13 mm long, clawed (ca 6 mm long), auriculate, auricles ca. 2 mm long, apex obtuse; keel 10 mm long, apex obtuse, adnate at apex. Stamens 10, diadelphous (9+1), vexillary stamen free; staminal tube 8 mm long, filaments (free part) filiform, ca. 2 mm long; anthers uniform. Ovary shortly stipitate, linear or fusiform, puberulent to hairy, unilocular, ovules (5-) 8-12, placentation marginal; style terete, bent, conspicuously bearded near stigma. Legumes black, brownish black, brown or yellowish brown, linear-oblong, slightly curved, 2.5-5 cm x 3-6 mm, pubescent to glabrous, apex beaked. Seeds 8-12, spheroid.
